CHIMANIMANI – A significant administrative error disrupted the Grade 7 examination session at Gudyanga Primary School in Chimanimani District last Friday, when candidates were mistakenly presented with the wrong Zimsec paper.
Pupils, expecting to write their Agriculture, Science and Technology examination, sat ready only to be handed the Physical Education and Arts paper scheduled for the following Monday. According to sources, the incorrect papers were distributed among the candidates and were on the verge of being written before the mistake was identified and they were withdrawn.
The incident is the latest in a series of administrative challenges, including paper leakages, that have periodically plagued the national examination body, sometimes leading to court cases and resits for affected candidates.
However, Zimsec has offered a different account of the event. Nicky Dhlamini, the Zimsec Public Relations Manager, confirmed the mix-up but insisted that the papers did not reach the candidates.
“We did receive information that the Monday paper was opened on Friday,” Dhlamini stated.
“It is important to note that the paper was not issued to candidates at all. Zimsec officials were alerted and they went to the school. The PED and the DSI also went there. The opened paper was retrieved and there was no prejudice to the exam.”
Attempts to get further clarification from Chimanimani District Schools Inspector (DSI) Elsie Muyocha were referred to the Provincial Education Director (PED), Richard Gabaza, who could not be reached for comment.
The swift retrieval of the papers averted a potential examination crisis, ensuring the integrity of the session was maintained.
