Suspected Killer of Two CID Officers Apprehended by Vigilant Bikita Residents

MASVINGO – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of Daniel Munyanyi (50), the prime suspect in the brutal murder of two detectives in Zaka on Sunday morning, following a swift operation by members of the public in the Nyika area of Bikita .

Munyanyi, of Ndume Village under Chief Ndanga in Zaka, was apprehended late Sunday afternoon by vigilant community members who had heeded the police call for information. The firearm allegedly used in the commission of the murders has also been recovered .

The arrest brings a swift conclusion to a manhunt launched earlier in the day after Munyanyi allegedly shot and killed Detective Constables Bernard Chimbeke (37) and McKenzie Chitsowe (43) at around 5 AM on 1 March 2026. The officers were in Ndume Village tracking the suspect over a string of armed robbery cases in Harare and surrounding areas when they were fatally shot .

Community Rises to the Occasion

In a statement released on Monday, Police Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba confirmed the arrest and praised the public for their decisive action.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Daniel Munyanyi (50) at Nyika Area, Bikita, Masvingo, while hiding late this afternoon,” read the statement released by Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi.

“The arrest was effected by members of the public. The firearm used in the commission of murder cases has also been recovered” .

Nyathi further commended the residents of Nyika for their vigilance and cooperation.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police commends the people in Nyika for working together with the police to effect the arrest,” Nyathi said .

Officers Laid to Rest

The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the law enforcement community and the nation at large. The two detectives were described by colleagues as dedicated officers who were committed to their duty of ridding the community of violent crime.

Commissioner-General Mutamba has expressed his deepest condolences to the Chimbeke and Chitsowe families, assuring them that the force stands with them during this difficult time. The police have promised to release more details regarding the investigation in due course.

The arrest of Munyanyi highlights the crucial role that community-police partnerships play in maintaining law and order.
