GWANDA – A security guard stands accused of attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a patron multiple times for attempting to leave a bottle store without permission in a shocking incident that has left the Guyu community reeling.
Mpumelelo Masuku (40) appeared before Gwanda Regional Magistrate Sithembiso Ndebele on Monday, where he pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder. The court remanded him in custody until October 10, 2025, pending further investigations.
Prosecutor Ngonidzashe Shumba detailed the violent events of September 14, 2025, that unfolded at Ndlovini Bottle Store in Bethel Business Centre.
“Masuku was manning the main entrance of the bottle store. The complainant who was inside the bottle store wanted to go out and the accused blocked him,” Shumba told the court.
“The complainant then sneaked out, which did not go well with Masuku who charged towards him and pushed him away.”
The situation escalated dramatically into a violent pursuit.
“The complainant fell down after being knocked with his head. He managed to get up and ran away, but the accused chased him,” the prosecutor continued.
“When the complainant fell and lay on his stomach, Masuku produced an okapi knife and stabbed him six times on the back, once on the left thigh and once on the right thigh. He also picked a brick and hit the complainant on his left cheek.”
According to the prosecution, Masuku fled the scene after the brutal assault, leaving the victim severely injured on the ground. Quick-thinking villagers rushed to provide assistance, alerting police authorities who arranged for the victim to receive urgent medical treatment at a nearby hospital.
The case has been adjourned to October 10, 2025, as police continue their investigation into the violent incident that has raised concerns about security personnel conduct in entertainment establishments.
