HARARE – In a dramatic reversal, Bikita South Member of Parliament Energy Mutodi has issued a full apology to Finance and Economic Development Ministry Permanent Secretary George Guvamatanga, retracting corruption allegations he made against the senior official in a social media rant.

Mutodi, who serves as Chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Budget, Finance, and Economic Development, took to X on Thursday with serious accusations against Guvamatanga, alleging corruption and demanding of kickbacks.

The former Deputy Minister of Information has since performed a complete about-face, stating that after reflection and a private telephone conversation with Guvamatanga, the two had reached an understanding.

“I therefore wish to issue an apology unreservedly to Mr George Guvamatanga for the reputational damage the tweets may have caused,” Mutodi stated in a formal retraction.

“I have made instructions that the tweets be erased with immediate effect.”

The swift deletion of the social media posts and the public apology came after what Mutodi described as a productive discussion with the Permanent Secretary, where both parties agreed not to escalate the matter further.

The incident highlights the growing tension between parliamentary oversight committees and executive officials, though the rapid resolution suggests efforts to maintain working relationships within government structures.
