HARARE – In a bid to inspire in-depth and impactful health reporting, Cimas Health Group has unveiled the Cimas @80 Media Awards, dangling a total of US$9,000 in prize money to encourage Zimbabwean journalists to delve deeper into health sector stories.

The awards were launched in the capital on Friday, with four categories open for competition: healthcare transformation, health and wellness, medical innovation, and public health awareness. Winners in each category will receive US$1,500, while runners-up will be awarded US$750.

Cimas Chief Executive Officer, Vuli Ndlovu, challenged journalists to move beyond surface-level reporting.

“Sometimes I wish the conversations were deeper. Let’s understand the impact of the story on healthcare — to investment, to communities, and even to the path we’ve walked,” Ndlovu said.

He emphasised that while the cash prizes are attractive, the ultimate goal is narrative shift and meaningful storytelling.

“We want as many stories out there. Sometimes, the prize is simply having been in the race,” he added.

The awards ceremony is set to take place in Bulawayo on November 20.

A judging panel comprising veteran journalists, medical practitioners, and representatives from the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists will adjudicate the entries. Submissions close on October 31.

Cimas, which is celebrating 80 years of service, has a history of supporting media excellence, including being a gold package sponsor for health reporting at the National Journalism and Media Awards (NJAMA).
