Calls Grow for Brito’s Return as Warriors Face Coaching Crisis

Sports Reporter

Zimbabwe’s national football team, the Warriors, is embroiled in a deepening coaching crisis, with mounting public pressure for the dismissal of current coach Michael Nees and the return of former mentor Baltemar Brito ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

The team’s disappointing performance under Nees, with only two victories in twelve matches, has sparked widespread criticism. The recent back-to-back 1-0 defeats to Benin and Rwanda have particularly angered fans and analysts alike, who describe the team’s display as disorganised and amateurish.

Football analyst Tendai Mawarire expressed the growing sentiment among supporters:

“We have consistently argued that Nees was not the right man for this job and that Brito was the superior choice. It was a mistake to let Brito go and then appoint Nees.”

Questions are being raised about the appointment process undertaken by the previous normalization committee led by Lincoln Mutasa.

“How could they hand the Warriors to a coach whose experience was primarily in schools and junior football development?” Mawarire questioned.

“What did they see in this figure when more qualified candidates had applied, especially with FIFA covering the salary?”

With crucial World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Lesotho approaching, and Afcon on the horizon, many believe time is running too short to integrate a completely new foreign coach.

Sports commentator Grace Chidhakwa noted,

“If Brito is not an option, there isn’t enough time for a new foreign coach to settle. The best option might be to bring Brito back as he already knows the players and our football environment.”

Some have suggested a compromise solution.

“Alternatively, if ZIFA can secure funds, they could bring in Brito as technical advisor for the remaining World Cup qualifiers and Afcon finals,” proposed Chidhakwa.

The football community continues to debate the best path forward as the Warriors seek to resolve their coaching dilemma and harness the evident player talent for international success.
