Baba Harare Calls for Professionalism and Respect in Gospel Music Industry

HARARE – Renowned musician Baba Harare has issued a strong appeal to churches and gospel promoters, urging them to adopt greater professionalism and accountability in their dealings with artists, warning that exploitation is stifling both ministry and livelihoods.

The artist, born Braveman Chizvino, took to Facebook to reflect on his challenging first year since transitioning from secular to gospel music. While he described the spiritual fulfillment as profound, he revealed the move has come with significant financial and professional hardships.

“From a ministerial perspective, gospel concerts are powerful. But from a business perspective, it’s a different story,” Baba Harare stated.

“I would not advise any upcoming artist to rely exclusively on gospel shows.”

He illustrated his point with a recent incident where he performed at a church event without requesting a performance fee, asking only for US$200 to cover fuel and expenses. He claims his follow-up on the agreement was met with ridicule and hostility.

“This is not Kingdom behaviour,” he asserted.

“If we want the gospel genre to grow and stand strong, we must treat gospel artists with dignity and fairness.”

The musician contrasted this with his experiences in the secular music industry, where he says payment disputes were non-existent.

He emphasized that gospel music is both a ministry and a business, warning that the industry risks stagnation if exploitation continues.

“This is not just singing. It is ministry, but it is also a business,” he added, calling on churches to honor contracts and for the broader community to support gospel ministry more effectively.
