MUTARE – The City Centre was plunged into shock and dismay on Saturday after a newborn infant was discovered dumped in a rubbish bin at the entrance of a First Capital Bank branch along Herbert Chitepo Street.

The grim discovery was made at approximately 5 PM by a passerby who immediately alerted the authorities.

Police have confirmed they are investigating a case of infant exposure after the body of what appeared to be a seven to eight-month-old infant was recovered from the bin.

“The body has been transferred to Victoria Chitepo Hospital mortuary for post mortem examination as we work to determine the exact circumstances surrounding this tragic incident,” a police spokesperson stated.

“We are appealing to anyone with information that could assist this investigation to report to their nearest Police Station immediately.”

The incident has sent ripples of anguish through the community, raising urgent concerns about child welfare and safe abandonment alternatives. Local residents expressed their horror at the discovery, with many calling for greater awareness of options available to mothers in crisis.

“This is a heartbreaking situation that no child should ever experience,” said a community advocate who wished to remain anonymous.

“There are always alternatives to such desperate measures. We need to ensure every mother knows where to find help and support.”

The police investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to identify the child and locate those responsible.
