BULAWAYO – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has imposed a ban on night travel for school children, issuing a stern warning to parents, schools, and transport operators as the country experiences its peak back-to-school rush.
The directive comes as schools nationwide prepare to reopen for the third term on Tuesday.
On Monday, major departure points in Bulawayo, such as City Hall and OK Mart, were bustling with activity. Hundreds of boarding students boarded buses destined for schools across Matabeleland South and North, with some institutions having to hire extra buses from local day schools to meet the high demand.
In a strong statement, the police emphasized that the safety of learners is paramount.
“School authorities and transporters must ensure buses are not overloaded and that travel takes place during daylight hours only,” read the ZRP statement.
The police clarified that the ban is a critical safety measure.
“Night travel for learners is strictly off-limits,” the force stated, highlighting that it “exposes children to danger, from road accidents to criminal attacks.”
The ZRP also issued a direct appeal to drivers, stating,
“Drivers must avoid speeding and strictly comply with road rules to prevent accidents.”
The police have vowed to clamp down on reckless driving and the use of unroadworthy vehicles during this period.
In a related advisory aimed at curbing crime, schools have been encouraged to avoid handling large sums of cash. The ZRP recommended that tuition and fees be deposited directly into financial institutions to reduce the risk of armed robbery and theft on school premises.
Parents and guardians are being urged to partner with authorities by ensuring their children only use certified and safe transport during daylight hours.
