Shock DNA Report: Nearly 60% of Paternity Tests in Zimbabwe Return Negative Results

Gender and Community Reporter

HARARE – A recent report from a leading DNA testing agency has revealed a startling statistic: nearly 60% of paternity tests conducted in Zimbabwe yield a negative result, meaning the tested man is not the biological father.

The data from Global DNA Zimbabwe has ignited widespread conversation, highlighting deep social issues and the profound emotional impact of these scientific revelations. The report states that in 2024, a significant 59% of tests returned negative results, while only 41% confirmed paternity.

Mr. Nigel Bothwell, an official from Global DNA Zimbabwe, explained that clients seek testing for a variety of critical reasons.

“Many people request paternity tests for various reasons, including child support, inheritance disputes, and simply for peace of mind,” he said.

The outcomes, however, often trigger intense emotional responses. Mr. Bothwell noted,

“In paternity cases, we have seen a range of emotions, from relief and closure to shock and heartbreak.”

He emphasized that their role extends beyond mere science, stating,

“Each case reminds us that DNA testing isn’t just a scientific process; it’s about real lives and relationships.”

Beyond paternity, the agency also handles maternal testing, which is crucial in scenarios like hospital mix-ups, immigration verification, and adoption reunions. Throughout all their services, Mr. Bothwell stressed the core principle of their work:

“One thing that stands out is how critical accurate and confidential DNA testing is in preserving family dignity and ensuring justice.”

He concluded by affirming that the company’s mission is to approach every sensitive situation with the necessary empathy and professionalism, understanding the life-altering weight the results can carry.
