Crimes and Courts

BULAWAYO – A police officer stationed at Fairbridge has been remanded in custody after appearing in court on charges of allegedly choking and raping a female colleague in a toilet.

The accused, whose identity is withheld to protect the victim, appeared before Bulawayo Regional Magistrate Mark Dzira facing a rape charge. He was remanded in custody until September 16 for trial.

According to court proceedings, the incident occurred while the complainant was socializing with friends. She had excused herself to use the toilet when the accused allegedly stormed in, grabbed her, and demanded she remove her clothes. The court heard that he then forced her to the ground and sexually assaulted her.

The matter was reported to police, leading to the officer’s arrest.

In a separate case, a 25-year-old Bulawayo woman, Veronica Sibanda, has been remanded in custody until September 5 after allegedly performing oral sex on a five-year-old boy.

Sibanda, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, allegedly committed the act on August 9 while the minor was left in her care at his brother’s residence in Mzilikazi.

Prosecutor Jethro Mada told the court that Sibanda kissed the boy on the cheek before removing his trousers and underwear. She allegedly caressed his testicles and performed oral sex on him.

The matter came to light when the child reported the incident to his brother upon returning home, leading to Sibanda’s arrest.
