Zimbabwean football has been rocked by shocking scenes following the assault of Yadah FC goalkeeper Godknows Gurure, who was allegedly attacked after his team’s 3-2 defeat to Ngezi Platinum Stars last Friday.
In a strongly worded statement, Yadah’s executive and management condemned the incident, describing it as “vicious, cowardly, and despicable.”
The club said the attack, reportedly carried out by a sponsor, stemmed from accusations that Gurure had “sold the match.”
“We have ZERO TOLERANCE for violence of any kind. These barbaric and utterly unacceptable acts have absolutely no place in football or in civilized society,” Yadah Football Club Executive and Management.
Yadah pledged to stand firmly behind their goalkeeper, vowing to pursue every available legal channel and to cooperate fully with law enforcement.
The club also confirmed that an internal investigation is underway, emphasizing that the perpetrators acted independently and without the sanction of its leadership.
The statement further included an apology to Gurure, his teammates, stakeholders, and the wider football community, assuring that such behavior “will NOT be tolerated.”
Meanwhile, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) has launched an official investigation after receiving a complaint from the Footballers Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ).
In a press release issued on 24 August 2025:
The PSL said it had requested detailed reports from Yadah FC, in addition to the standard match documents, to establish the facts of the incident.
The League stressed that the safety and welfare of players remain a top priority, and pledged to take disciplinary action once investigations are complete.
The PSL added that it would not issue further comment until all reports have been reviewed.
The incident has sparked outrage across Zimbabwe’s football fraternity, with growing calls for stronger player protection and greater accountability from clubs.
The outcome of the PSL’s probe is expected not only to determine responsibility in this case but also to set a precedent for how violence is dealt with in local football going forward.
