CHINHOYI – The Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) community is in mourning following the tragic deaths of two male students who died by suicide within days of each other, in incidents that have cast a pall over the institution.
Abraham Chabata, a Level 1.1 student pursuing a degree in Agricultural Engineering, tragically took his own life on August 20, 2025. His death came just four days after that of Takudzwa Alex Mapurisa, a Level 2.1 Mechatronics Engineering student, who died on August 16, 2025 after a known battle with mental health challenges.
Confirming the devastating incidents, the Student Representative Council (SRC) Minister for External Affairs, Information and Publicity, Marlvin Saint Madanda, expressed the community’s grief.
“Yes, I can confirm that there have indeed been two reported cases of suicide at Chinhoyi University of Technology within the past week,” Madanda told Zim GBC News.
“These are deeply tragic incidents, and our thoughts remain with the families, friends, and members of the university community affected by these losses.”
Regarding the circumstances, Madanda stated that details are still emerging.
“At this stage, investigations are ongoing,” he added.
It was also confirmed that neither student left a suicide note. However, prior to his death, Abraham Chabata had sent a message concerning his mobile money account.
The back-to-back tragedies have sparked urgent conversations about mental health support structures within academic environments, where pressure can be intense. Mental health professionals emphasize the critical importance of providing accessible support to students facing emotional and psychological challenges.
In response to the events, the university has reiterated the availability of its counselling services and is actively encouraging students in distress to seek help immediately.
As investigations continue, the university community is united in grief, supporting one another through the profound loss.
If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, please reach out for help. Contact your university counselling services, a local helpline, or a trusted individual.
