A Zimbabwean student, Ziweya Leeroy, has tragically passed away following a vicious assault in Punjab, India.
The 22-year-old, who had been battling critical injuries for eight days, died on Thursday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bathinda.
Leeroy, a student of Radiology and Imaging Technology (RIT), had been pursuing his studies at Guru Kashi University in Talwandi Sabo since 2023. The fatal incident occurred on August 13, a day after he was involved in an altercation with a university security guard.
According to a police complaint filed by ASI Des Raj, the initial investigation revealed that the altercation on August 12 led to a targeted attack.
The following day, when Leeroy ventured outside the university premises, he was ambushed by a group including security guard Dilpreet Singh and others.
The student sustained severe head injuries and was immediately rushed to AIIMS Bathinda, where he later succumbed to his wounds.
Indian police have acted swiftly, arresting seven individuals connected to the assault. The case, initially registered under sections including attempt to murder, wrongful restraint, and rioting with a deadly weapon, has now been upgraded to include murder charges.
Bathinda’s Senior Superintendent of Police, Amneet Kondal, provided an update on the investigation, stating,
“Seven persons have been arrested, and efforts are being made to arrest two more persons, who are suspected to be associated with the attack.
The section pertaining to murder has been added to the already registered case. Further investigations are being made.”
The community and fellow students are in mourning as authorities continue their investigation to ensure all responsible are brought to justice.
