In a significant crackdown on illicit mineral trafficking, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have intercepted 15.7 kilogrammes of gold worth approximately US$1.56 million, following a tip-off about a smuggling attempt.
Acting on intelligence received on Tuesday, detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department’s Minerals, Flora and Fauna Unit successfully tracked a Toyota Prado Land Cruiser suspected of carrying the contraband. The operation led to the arrest of three individuals allegedly involved in the smuggling ring.
The high-value seizure underscores the ongoing challenges the nation faces with mineral leakages. The recovered gold has since been handed over to the Fidelity Gold Refinery in Msasa for safekeeping.
Authorities confirmed that investigations are ongoing to uncover the network behind this operation.
“Investigations into the smuggling attempt are ongoing to identify other possible accomplices and prevent similar incidents in the future,” a police statement read.
The bust comes against a backdrop of significant losses to the national economy. According to the International Crisis Group,
“Zimbabwe loses about US$1.5-billion annually to smuggling of the precious metal including gold,” highlighting the critical need for continued and enhanced enforcement operations.
This interception represents a major victory for security forces in their efforts to curb illegal mineral exports and protect national revenue.
