MASVINGO – Tensions are rising in the Masvingo Urban Ward 7 by-election campaign after independent candidate Prosper Taruvinga Tiringindi accused his Zanu PF opponent of systematically vandalising and tearing down his campaign materials.
Tiringindi has formally reported Simbarashe Shonhiwa, the Zanu PF candidate, alleging that he not only removed Tiringindi’s posters but also covered them by pasting his own on top. The incident occurred after Tiringindi had placed his posters on electricity poles, trees, and concrete slabs on August 18.
He discovered that 15 of his posters had been destroyed the following day. Tiringindi strongly condemned the acts, calling them “barbaric” and stating that “it shows the level of a person’s intellect.”
When contacted for comment by Zim GBC News, Shonhiwa denied all allegations.
“There is no evidence to prove that I am the one who vandalised Tiringindi’s campaign posters,” he said, adding that he had also found some of his own posters missing.
Efforts to get an official police comment from Masvingo Police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa were unsuccessful.
Despite the setback, Tiringindi remains confident of his chances.
“I am convinced that victory is certain. I urge residents to come in numbers and vote for a change. Let’s get into free campaign without others vandalising posters,” he added.
