HARARE, Zimbabwe – Volkswagen (VW) owners across Zimbabwe are being urged to act immediately following a global safety recall affecting specific models equipped with potentially deadly Takata airbags. The recall, one of the largest in automotive history, concerns airbags that could rupture upon deployment, firing dangerous metal fragments into the vehicle cabin, posing a severe risk of injury or death to drivers and passengers.
CFAO Mobility Zimbabwe, the authorised distributor for Volkswagen in the country, is spearheading the recall locally. In a significant commitment to road safety, the company has confirmed it will repair any affected Volkswagen vehicle in Zimbabwe, completely free of charge, even if it was not originally purchased through their dealerships.
The Deadly Defect
The recall centres on Takata airbag inflators, components once widely used by almost all major global car manufacturers. Long-term exposure to high humidity and heat – conditions prevalent in many parts of Zimbabwe – causes these inflators to degrade. When triggered in a crash, a degraded inflator can explode with excessive force, rupturing the metal casing and turning it into shrapnel.
“This is not a minor fault; it’s a critical safety hazard directly linked to fatalities and serious injuries worldwide,” stated a CFAO Mobility Zimbabwe spokesperson.
“The risk is present even if the vehicle shows no outward signs of trouble. It is absolutely crucial for affected VW owners in Zimbabwe to act immediately. Ignoring this recall could have devastating consequences.”
Affected Volkswagen Models in Zimbabwe
Volkswagen has identified the following models in Zimbabwe as potentially affected:
· 2006-2007 Volkswagen Passat Sedan
· 2012-2014 Volkswagen Passat
· 2017 Volkswagen Passat Wagon
· 2017-2019 Volkswagen Beetle / Beetle Convertible
Owners of other Volkswagen models are also encouraged to check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) as the recall list may be updated.
“No Owner Left Behind” Pledge
Emphasizing the universal risk, CFAO Mobility Zimbabwe has taken the unprecedented step of offering free repairs to all affected Volkswagen owners in the country, regardless of the vehicle’s purchase history.
“Safety is non-negotiable and transcends where a vehicle was bought,” the CFAO Mobility Zimbabwe spokesperson affirmed.
“Whether you purchased your VW new from us, second-hand privately, or imported it, if it has a recalled Takata airbag, we will replace it free of charge at our authorised dealerships. Our priority is ensuring every Volkswagen driver and passenger on Zimbabwean roads is safe.”
How to Check and What to Do
Determining if your vehicle is affected is straightforward:
- Locate Your VIN: Find the 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number on the lower driver’s side corner of your windscreen or in your registration documents.
- Check Online: Visit the official Volkswagen recall website and enter your VIN.
- Contact CFAO Mobility Zimbabwe: If unsure, visit your nearest authorised Volkswagen dealership or contact CFAO Mobility Zimbabwe directly for assistance.
If your vehicle is affected:
· You will receive a free replacement of the faulty airbag inflator.
· Repairs will be performed by certified technicians at authorised Volkswagen service centres.
· CFAO Mobility Zimbabwe pledges a quick and efficient process.
Why This Recall Cannot Be Ignored
This recall impacts nearly every major global automaker, highlighting a widespread component failure, not a reflection of Volkswagen’s brand alone. With Zimbabwe’s climate potentially accelerating the degradation of these airbags, local drivers face an elevated risk.
“Getting this fixed isn’t an inconvenience; it’s a lifesaving measure,” the spokesperson stressed.
“Taking a few minutes to check your VIN and schedule a free repair could prevent a tragedy. It protects you, your family, and everyone who rides with you.”
Zimbabwean Volkswagen owners are urged not to delay. Contact CFAO Mobility Zimbabwe or your local authorised VW dealer today.
