Health experts have raised concerns over children’s growing addiction to salty foods, which can lead to unhealthy cravings and long-term health problems.

Dr. Mary Nyathi, a leading health specialist, warned that excessive salt intake in children can trigger hypertension and other health complications.

“Many children are now used to salty foods, which creates cravings and increases their risk of developing high blood pressure,” said Dr. Nyathi.

Another alarming practice highlighted by experts is the habit of some mothers and grandmothers giving children cooking oil to drink, unaware of its dangers. Dr. Nyathi strongly cautioned against this, stating that consuming cooking oil can cause severe and persistent chest infections.

“Drinking cooking oil can lead to serious respiratory problems that may become chronic. Parents and caregivers must avoid this harmful practice,” she emphasized.

Health professionals also advise children to drink more water and cut down on sugary beverages, including “100% fruit drinks,” which often contain high sugar levels.

“These drinks contribute to diabetes, obesity, and weight-related issues in children”.

“Sugary drinks are a major factor behind rising cases of diabetes and obesity among young children,” warned another health expert.

Authorities urge parents to promote healthier eating habits to safeguard their children’s long-term well-being.
