Cyclone Batsirai Wrecks Havoc In Madagascar

Six people were reported dead on Saturday in southern Madagascar after Cyclone Batsirai made landfall, leaving buildings collapsed.

Reports emanating from the island state that Tropical Cyclone Batsirai swept inland late on Saturday, slamming into Madagascar’s eastern coastline with heavy rains and wind speeds of 165 km/h. It was projected it could displace as many as 150,000 people.

Nosy Varika, a town on the coast of Madagascar was the most affected place in the country, there is heavy flooding and a number of buildings have collapsed leaving people homeless.

Two weeks ago the island was wrecked by another cyclone, Ana which is reported to have killed more than 55 people and displaced 130 000 others.

Cyclone Batsirai also caused landslides in the central Madagascar region of Haute Mastiatra and villagers had to shovel mud from the roads on Sunday.

Last week more than 80 people died in Mozambique, 99 were injured and thousands were affected by Tropical Cyclone Ana.

In Eastern parts of Zimbabwe, roads were damaged and bridges were swept away by the heavy rains as a result of tropical cyclone Ana.

Some parts of Zimbabwe experienced heavy rainfalls last week including Bulawayo, were some households were flooded.

The Mateorological Services Department (MSD) of Zimbabwe issued a statement on Saturday saying that the Tropical Cyclone Batsirai which is over southern Madagascar is strengthening the south-easterly airflow into the country.
