The relaxation of the Lockdown curfew has seen travelers embarking on their journeys at odd hours of the night.
A man who decided to visit his rural home in Jotsholo, Matabeleland North found himself at the mercy of six robbers in Bulawayo along Lobengula Street on Tuesday night.
He wanted to hitch hike for transport at a dangerous spot near Amakhosi Cultural Centre.
Press and Public Relations Officer for Bulawayo Province, Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the matter.
The incident happened around 9PM.
The 47 year old male from Queens Park East Suburb was opposite City Council Engineering Department along Masotsha Ndlovu and Lobengula Street trying to hitch hike to Jotsholo.
He was pounced on by six men who came out of a closeby bushy area catching him unawares. One of assailants grabbed him by the throat and slapped him several times on the face and threatened to stab him with an Okapi knife if he did not cooperate.
“They threatened to kill the complainant if ever he makes (made) noise and searched his trousers pockets.” Elaborated Insp. Ncube.
The man pleaded with the gang members not to harm him and he surrendered his wallet containing USD$20,00 R100,00 cash, a Huwaei Mate 7 mobile phone, a Nokia C65 cellphone, a traveling bag, groceries, various female clothes, 2 cases of fizzy drinks and two packets of cigarettes.
The gang fled the scene and vanished into the same bushy thicket that they had appeared from.
The man went on to report the matter at Mzilikazi Police Station way after midnight.
Insp. Ncube urges the general public to desist from hiking at dangerous spots.
“The general public is warned against hiking for transport in dark spots as they become vulnerable.”
Insp. Ncube said it is important to use public transport that is safe than taking short cuts that end up being costly.
“We also appeal to the public with information about these criminals to report to any police station,” he said.
