Uganda’s Museveni, 80, Seeks to Extend 40-Year Rule in 2026 Elections

Zim GBC News Reporter
Kampala – Uganda’s long-serving President Yoweri Museveni will seek another term in the 2026 elections, potentially extending his 40-year rule as he approaches 81 years old, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party confirmed.

Museveni to Officially Declare Candidacy

NRM electoral body chairperson Tanga Odoi announced that Museveni will pick up nomination forms on June 28 to run for both party chairperson and presidential candidate.

“The president will pick expression-of-interest forms for two positions—one for chairperson of the party and the other to contest as presidential flag bearer,” Odoi said in a video posted by state broadcaster UBC.

Constitutional Changes Paved Way for Extended Rule

Museveni, who took power in 1986, is Africa’s fourth-longest-serving leader. His party has amended the constitution twice to remove presidential age and term limits, allowing him to remain in office.

Bobi Wine to Challenge Again

His main opponent will once again be Bobi Wine (Robert Kyagulanyi), the pop star-turned-politician who finished second in the 2021 elections. Wine has already declared his intention to run, despite rejecting the 2021 results over allegations of vote-rigging and military intimidation.

Critics Accuse Museveni of Authoritarian Rule

Human rights groups and opposition figures have long accused Museveni of stifling dissent, manipulating elections, and using security forces to crush protests. The president denies these claims, insisting his lengthy rule reflects popular support.
