Beer Brawl Turns Bloody: Axe Attack Over Debt Lands Man in Prison

Crimes and Courts
Plumtree – A drinking session in Gonde village, Madlambudzi, turned into a near-fatal attack when Nkosilathi Ndlovu (40) struck his drinking companion with an axe over an unsettled debt.

The Plumtree Magistrates’ Court sentenced Ndlovu to eight years in prison on June 18, 2025, after convicting him of attempted murder.

How the Drinking Session Turned Deadly

The court heard that on March 6, 2025, Ndlovu and the victim, Solomon Khaliphe Ncube, were sharing beers at Ndlovu’s workplace when the mood turned violent.

“Ndlovu was in high spirits, cracking jokes, until Ncube asked him to repay a debt,” said prosecutor Fezile Mpofu.

“Instead of settling the matter peacefully, Ndlovu grabbed an axe and struck Ncube on the head, leaving him unconscious with a severe injury.”

Miraculously, Ncube survived the attack after receiving urgent medical attention.

Justice Served with Stern Warning

Magistrate Mark Dzira handed down an 8-year jail term, suspending 2 years for 5 years on condition that Ndlovu does not commit a similar violent offense.

“This case serves as a harsh reminder that violence has consequences,” the magistrate said.

“Alcohol and unresolved disputes are a dangerous mix.”

Community Shocked by Brutal Attack

Villagers expressed shock over the incident, with many warning against letting disputes escalate.

“A simple debt nearly cost a man his life,” said a local resident.

“We hope this sentencing sends a strong message.”
