Zanu PF’s Midlands province has firmly stated that there is no going back on plans to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term of office, despite his previous assertions that he intends to step down in 2028.
Edson Chiherenge, the Zanu PF chairperson for Midlands, expressed strong support for the extension, declaring,
“We want him to continue to rule” during a recent meeting in Kwekwe.
He emphasized that the province has officially endorsed a resolution for Mnangagwa to remain in power until 2030, asserting that
“2030 belongs to Emmerson Mnangagwa.”
Farai Marapira, the Zanu PF director for information, indicated that party members are awaiting guidance on how to proceed following the adoption of the 2030 resolution. He acknowledged the importance of respecting democracy within the party, stating that the structures are allowed to express their opinions, which reflects the democratic principles of Zanu PF.
Despite Mnangagwa’s repeated statements this year about retiring when his term ends in 2028, the Midlands province’s insistence on extending his presidency highlights a significant divide between the party’s grassroots sentiments and the president’s declared intentions.
