In a troubling trend, police in Harare are investigating two recent armed robberies that highlight a rise in crime across the country.
Church Robbery Details
The first incident occurred on October 31 around 11 p.m. at a church located in Goodhope, Marlborough. Five masked men, armed with a pistol, assaulted two security guards, ransacked the church complex, and made off with $54,200 from a safe. This brazen attack underscores the increasing boldness of criminals in the area.
Home Invasion Incident
The following night, another robbery took place in Glenwood, Epworth, where two unidentified female suspects posed as potential buyers of water. They attacked the homeowner and stole $7,000 in cash along with various groceries.
Contributing Factors to Rising Crime
The recent surge in robberies is attributed to several factors, including a growing tendency for individuals to store cash at home due to high banking fees and a lack of trust in Zimbabwe’s financial institutions, which have faced vulnerabilities in the past. Additionally, economic hardships and widespread poverty are driving these crimes, with thieves increasingly targeting homes and businesses that hold significant cash reserves.
The situation reflects broader economic challenges in Zimbabwe, prompting concerns about safety and security in communities.
