Two police officers from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have been arrested following a viral video that showed them accepting bribes from public transport vehicles near the Mabvuku turn-off on the Harare-Mutare Road. The officers, identified as Sergeant Chifamba and Constable Gunzva, are now facing both disciplinary and criminal charges for their actions.
Official Response
Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi condemned the officers’ behavior, stating,
“These are bad apples who do not deserve to be serving in the Police Service.”
He emphasized the ZRP’s commitment to combating corruption within its ranks and assured the public that such misconduct will not be tolerated.
Public Concerns
The incident has sparked significant public concern regarding police conduct, particularly as there have been ongoing complaints about officers engaging in corrupt practices. For instance, reports have surfaced about officers at the ZBC traffic lights along Beatrice Road stopping motorists for minor infractions and allegedly demanding bribes to allow them to proceed.
Nyathi reiterated that the Commissioner-General of Police, Godwin Matanga, is dedicated to enforcing the law impartially, reinforcing the message that corruption will not be accepted within the police force.
