Arrest of Man for Faking Carjacking

Crimes and Courts Correspondent

A man named Douglas Chinoona has been arrested in connection with a scheme to fake a robbery in order to sell a rented vehicle.

The incident came to light following a statement from Good 2 Go Car Rental, which rented a Toyota Hilux to Chinoona.

Details of the Incident

Chinoona rented the vehicle on October 27, and the following day, he reported to the rental company that the car had been stolen from a lodge in Mabelreign. He also filed a report with the Mabelreign Police Station. However, investigations by the Vehicle Theft Squad (VTS) uncovered that Chinoona had fabricated the robbery. He allegedly conspired with a friend to illegally export the vehicle to Lusaka, Zambia, with the intent to sell it there.

Charges and Motives

Chinoona is currently in police custody, facing charges of vehicle theft and providing false information to the Police. Authorities have confirmed that he did not possess the US$2400 he claimed was intended for lobola (a traditional bride price) and that this was merely a tactic to deceive both the rental company and law enforcement.
