A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in Emalahleni, Mpumalanga, when 20-year-old Lindokuhle Maphanga was brutally killed after being forced to drink acid over a stolen cellphone allegation.

“I could hear my son screaming for help in the background. He was calling out, ‘Mama, mama,’ but the caller told him to be quiet,” recalled Lindokuhle’s mother, Nonhlanhla Mahula.

A taxi owner and his wife allegedly abducted Lindokuhle and his friend, demanding R3,500 to spare his life. However, the situation took a devastating turn when the duo was found abandoned on the roadside, brutally assaulted and forced to ingest acid.

“He was killed for R3,500, which I would have gladly given the taxi owner. We are devastated. What he did was inhumane. I’m struggling to cope with my son’s brutal death,” Nonhlanhla lamented.

The police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder, but no arrests have been made yet.

“We are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder. The investigation is ongoing,” said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdluli.

Nonhlanhla demands justice, insisting that the perpetrators be arrested and denied bail.

“They have caused me too much pain,” she said.
