President Mnangagwa has signed the Criminal Laws Amendment Act of 2024, making it illegal to engage in sexual activities with individuals under 18 years old.

This law was passed by Parliament in July and formally announced by Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr. Martin Rushwaya, in General Notice 1441A of 2024 in an Extraordinary Government Gazette Tuesday.

This development aligns with international standards and laws in various countries that aim to protect minors from exploitation and abuse. For instance, in many European nations, the age of consent is 18 years old, and sexual activities with minors are considered serious offenses. Similarly, several African countries, including Eswatini, Ethiopia, and Mozambique, have also set their age of consent at 18 years old.

The new law is expected to provide stronger protection for children and young persons in Zimbabwe. By criminalizing sex with minors, the government aims to prevent exploitation, abuse, and harm against vulnerable individuals. This move is a significant step forward in safeguarding the well-being and rights of young people.

Key Implications of the Law:

  • Criminalization of Sex with Minors: Engaging in sexual activities with individuals under 18 years old is now a criminal offense.
  • Protection of Children and Young Persons: The law aims to prevent exploitation, abuse, and harm against minors.
  • Alignment with International Standards: Zimbabwe’s law aligns with international standards and laws in various countries that protect minors.

Overall, this development marks a significant milestone in Zimbabwe’s efforts to protect its children and young people. By making sex with minors a criminal offense, the government demonstrates its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its most vulnerable citizens.
