The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) is introducing a smart prepaid billing system for large and medium power users starting October 1, 2024, due to a $5.7 billion debt crisis.
“The debt has severely impacted operations, resulting in cash flow constraints that threaten service delivery and energy security,” said Wellington Takavarasha, CEO of the Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF).
ZETDC requires customers to clear their arrears and prepay their bills by September 30, 2024.
“The migration to the smart prepaid billing system is urgent, and customers must prepare for the transition to avoid any disruptions,” Takavarasha emphasized.
Key points discussed during a meeting between ZMF and ZETDC include:
- ZETDC’s significant debt of approximately $5.7 billion across various customer segments
- The debt’s severe impact on operations and energy security
- The transition to the smart prepaid billing system starting October 1, 2024
- The need for customers to clear arrears and prepay by September 30, 2024
Customers are encouraged to contact their local ZETDC account managers for further clarification on the new system.
