The Zimbabwean government has acknowledged severe shortcomings in the conditions of service for the Zimbabwe National Army, with some Senators suggesting these issues may contribute to recent incidents of armed robbery involving military personnel.
Defence Deputy Minister Levi Mayihlome detailed the challenges facing the army in a Senate session, citing inadequate accommodation, equipment and salary inadequacies.
“Accommodating the Defence Forces has been a major challenge… The last cantonment area built for the armed forces was in the mid-90s,” Mayihlome said.
He highlighted ongoing housing projects, but emphasized the need for additional resources.
“When we request for this budget, we request that Hon. Senators also come and fight in our corner and assist us in pleading our case for adequate resources… Defence Forces cannot fend for themselves.”
Mayihlome also discussed issues with military vehicles, noting wear and tear and funding constraints.
“We are working on a program to procure vehicles and resolve these outstanding issues.”
In response to concerns about military personnel engaging in criminal activities, Mayihlome emphasized that such behavior is not condoned.
“Defence Forces are committed to maintaining discipline… We will investigate any specific concerns submitted in writing.”
Mayihlome reminisced about past provisions, such as comprehensive kits for barrack life.
“Those provisions have ceased due to persistent funding shortfalls.”
Efforts are underway to improve military accommodation, with contracts signed for material supply and camp rehabilitation.
“Defence forces cannot go on strike. They commit themselves to the ultimate sacrifice. When grievances arise, they must be heard.”
In one of Zim GBC News stories carried today, a member of the ZNA stands accused with five others for robbing Blue Circle Bus passengers of substantial amounts of money.
This is not an isolated incident as it is alleged that there has been several more armed robberies involving members of the ZNA.
