Zimbabwean Members of Parliament have called for increased funding for cancer research and treatment, emphasizing the need for a collective approach to address the growing threat of cancer in the country.
“We need to work together to address the cancer crisis in Zimbabwe,” said Shamva South MP, Joseph Mapiki.
“We need awareness campaigns, research into traditional medicines, and investment in modern technology.”
Gokwe-Kabuyuni’s Spencer Tshuma added,
“Early detection and treatment are crucial. We need to invest in modern equipment and trained personnel.”
Manicaland Proportional Representative, Miriam Matinenga emphasized the importance of awareness campaigns, particularly in rural areas, and suggested that traditional leaders play a key role in disseminating information about cancer.
Matabeleland South Proportional representative, Mail Nkomo proposed a comprehensive campaign strategy to educate the public about cancer, saying, “We need to work together to prevent and treat cancer effectively.”
The debate highlighted the critical need for a collective and comprehensive approach to address the growing threat of cancer in Zimbabwe, with over 7,500 new cases and over 2,500 deaths recorded per year.
