Brazilian model and influencer Suellen Carey has made headlines again by filing for divorce from herself, just one year after entering into a sologamous relationship.
Carey had previously stated that she struggled to find a suitable partner, leading her to marry herself in a bold act of self-love. However, she now admits that the experience has not been as fulfilling as she hoped.
“I put a lot of effort into making my self-marriage work, but I ended up feeling lonely and dissatisfied,” Carey said in a recent interview.
“I realized that my high expectations for myself were exhausting and often left me feeling isolated.”
Carey attended couples therapy alone in an attempt to navigate her feelings, but ultimately decided to end the relationship.
“Self-analysis and reflection are necessary,” she explained.
“Sometimes it’s vital to recognize when a cycle should come to an end, even if it involves a relationship with oneself.”
Before deciding to file for divorce, Carey participated in ten therapy sessions to better understand the challenges she faced. Despite her efforts, she concluded that ending her self-marriage was necessary for her healing and personal growth.
Carey now views her sologamous experience as an important lesson that has helped her gain a deeper understanding of herself.
“I’ve learned to embrace my individuality and recognize when it’s time to make important life changes,” she said.
Carey is not the first to embark on a journey of self-marriage. In 2021, fellow Brazilian Cris Galera made headlines for her self-wedding, only to divorce herself 90 days later after finding a new partner. Similarly, Kshama Bindu gained attention in 2022 as the first Indian woman to marry herself, inspired by a popular Netflix show.
As Carey moves forward, she hopes her story will encourage others to embrace their individuality and recognize when it’s time to make important life changes.
“I’m open to finding a new romantic partner in the future,” she said. “But for now, I’m focusing on myself and my personal growth.”
