According to recent High Court records, a staggering 2,149 divorce cases were heard and settled in 2023, with the Harare High Court handling the majority at 1,539.
“The numbers are alarming and indicate a growing trend of marital breakdowns in our society,” said a court official.
The records further reveal that 392 divorce matters were handled by the Bulawayo High Court, while the Masvingo court settled 92 cases. Additionally, courts in Chinhoyi and Mutare heard 36 and 90 cases, respectively.
Moreover, since the beginning of this year, 1,061 couples have already separated, indicating a continued upward trend in marital disputes.
“The courts are overwhelmed with divorce cases, and it’s a reflection of the challenges faced by couples in maintaining their marriages,” said another court official.
The rising divorce rate has raised concerns about the state of marriages and relationships in the country, with experts calling for increased support and counseling services to help couples work through their issues.
