Contaminated Maize Sparks Fear in Zambia After 400 Dogs Die

International Correspondent

Zambia’s Health Minister, Elijah Muchima, has announced that approximately 400 dogs have died in the past month due to contaminated maize, sparking concerns for human health.

“The test results are of great concern due to the several health implications for the population,” Muchima said.

The Minister revealee that half of the 25 samples taken from milling companies contained high levels of aflatoxins.

The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that aflatoxins can cause liver cancer in humans, prompting authorities to launch an investigation into the nation’s maize supply.

“We are still investigating how wide the toxic maize has spread,” Muchima said,

He added that

The “affected batches” of maize meal have been recalled and seizure notices have been issued to “affected companies.”

Opposition MP Sunday Chanda expressed concern, saying,

“Govt says 400 dogs have died due to toxins in some brands of meal. I’m a victim too. I lost over 6 big dogs over a period of 1 week… The bad meal is still out there being consumed!”

The Millers Association of Zambia assured that its businesses are working to resolve the issue and ensure public safety.

Muchima attributed the contamination to climate change and the recent drought, which has severely impacted maize supplies in the country.
