Senior Ranger Benjamin Never has demonstrated extraordinary bravery in his dedication to protecting wildlife and natural habitats. He has survived 10 armed contacts with poachers, resulting in six poachers killed, 29 pairs of ivory recovered, three guns, and 202 rounds of ammunition seized.
“SR Never demonstrated exceptional courage while carrying out his anti-poaching operations from 2005 to date,” said Zimparks Director-General Dr. Fulton Mangwanya. “His actions have shown that he is willing to risk his life to protect our wildlife and natural resources.”
SR Never’s remarkable record includes:
- In 2005, one poacher killed and eight pairs of ivory recovered
- In 2007, eight pairs of ivory and 195 AK-47 rounds of ammunition recovered
- In 2014, three armed contacts resulting in one poacher killed and several pairs of ivory recovered
- In 2015, four pairs of ivory recovered in Mana Pools
- In 2016, one poacher shot dead and one pair of ivory recovered
- In 2017, one poacher killed and one 375 rifle and three pairs of ivory recovered
SR Never was awarded for his gallantry at the World Ranger Day commemorations, along with SR Duncan Muzamba, who was recognized for his outstanding service with seven armed contacts, five poachers arrested, six left wounded, seven rifles, 81 rounds of ammunition, and nine pairs of ivory recovered.
“These rangers have shown that they are willing to put their lives on the line to protect our wildlife and natural resources,” said Dr. Mangwanya. “We are proud of their dedication and bravery.”
