The Officer in Charge of Rushinga Police station has said that the community and authorities are still trying to cope and come to terms of the triple murder that occurred in the area last week.
“We are still trying to come to terms with the senseless killing of three innocent people, including the soldier’s 18-year-old girlfriend,” said the Officer in Charge of Rushinga Police Station.
“The soldier’s actions were provocative and unjustified.”
According to the police memo, Corporal Henry Ncube, a 2.2 Combat Group Mudzi soldier attached to Rushinga Army base, entered Chikuni Bottle Store with a colleague, both armed with rifles, on the fateful night.
“This did not go well with the patrons, and a heated argument ensued,” said the memo.
Justice Makiwa, 33, was shot in the head, while Victor Mufaro Dzowa, 38, a CIO operative, was shot in the abdomen. Inspector Munemo Munetsi was also shot but escaped with injuries.
“The accused person cocked his rifle and shot without provocation,” said the police.
Ncube then went to the army barracks and shot his girlfriend, Evernice Magwenzi, 18, while she lay asleep. He then turned the gun on himself, shooting himself in the neck.
“It’s a tragic end to a senseless act of violence,” said the Officer in Charge.
The police memo concluded that “the soldiers provoked the situation by entering a public place drinking beer and armed with rifles.
“The forensic science laboratory is still determining the number of rounds discharged.
