“Dealing in foreign currency without authorization is a serious offense,” said Harare Magistrate Ruth Moyo, as she sentenced two illegal forex dealers to six months in jail. “The accused have shown no respect for the law, and their actions undermine the country’s economic stability.”
Kudakwashe Welcome Maketo, 24, and Ishmael Munashe Sakonda, 29, were convicted separately for illegal foreign currency dealing. “We will continue to crack down on such illegal activities,” said Prosecutor Mandirasa Chigumira. “The accused were caught red-handed, and their actions were a clear violation of the law.”
Maketo was arrested at Kamunhu Shopping Centre in Mabvuku after offering to buy foreign currency from passers-by. “I was just trying to make a living,” Maketo said in his defense. However, the court found him guilty and sentenced him to six months in prison, with three months suspended for five years on condition of good behavior.
Sakonda was arrested at Glen Norah B shops after detectives approached him with trap money. “I didn’t know it was illegal,” Sakonda claimed. However, the court rejected his defense and sentenced him to six months in prison, with three months suspended for five years on condition of good behavior.
“The law is clear, and those who break it will face the consequences,” said Magistrate Moyo.
