Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) supporter Godfrey Chidhawu Kanembera, popularly known as Madzibaba VeShanduka was allegedly arrested and severely tortured in the hands of the police yesterday morning in the capital Harare.
Reports emanating from sources suggest that he was arrested for ‘improper’ dressing.
Those who who have come to know him, know that he is always in CCC regalia (yellow) ever since the party came into being.
Madzibaba VeShanduko is said to have been seriously beaten on his legs and back. Images and video footage of his wounds are circulating on social media platforms.
Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) indicated that they are working to gain access to Madzibaba VeShanduka who is being held at Harare Central Police Station.
Updating the press, the lawyers said:
“Godfrey Karembera, popularly known Madzibaba VeShanduko is facing a charge of disorderly conduct for allegedly wearing yellow regalia and telling people in Harare’s CBD to vote for Nelson Chamisa. He is detained at Harare Central Police.”
Since the formation of CCC, Madzibaba VeShanduko has been attending CCC rallies, dressed in yellow regalia, imitating the performance of Mapostori sect, in a bid to boost morale for the CCC as the 26 March by-elections approach.
The police are said to have refused CCC to get Madzibaba VeShanduka to hospital in their car. The police are said to have refused and put Madzibaba in their “run down truck that has no windows”, tweeted Mahere.
“Madzibaba VeShanduko is finally being taken to hospital under police guard. He was severly tortured earlier today for wearing yellow. He suffered deep lacerations and bruises. He is having breathing difficulties,” bemoaned Mahere.
However in response to the allegations of police brutality, the ZRP said:
“The ZRP is investigating allegations that Godfrey Karembera (43), who claims to be Madzibaba VeShanduka was assaulted by police officers in Harare CBD today.”
The police stated that Madzibaba VeShanduka was using abusing language on them.
However ever since Chamisa and company dumped MDC-Alliance and the colour red and emerged with a new party or new name using the colour yellow, this has not gone well with some sections of the ruling party.
Vice President was quoted having said CCC is like lice that can be crushed against a stone to nothingness. There has been reports that wearing yellow regalia is becoming a ‘crime’ nationwide.
A Bulawayo journalist, Zenzele Ndebele reported that a school in Umzingwane District, Matabeleland South Province was visited by unnamed people asking why the school uniform colour is yellow.
Some unverified reports state that a verbal directive was made in Marondera when school headmasters met and concluded that teachers must not wear yellow when reporting for work.
Dr. Takavafira Zhou, the president of Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe told Pindula News that;
“Teachers across the country are reporting that the matter was discussed but we haven’t received a formal communication ourselves. Infact, there are some schools that are being told to change their uniforms. In case someone is planning to put it into writing, we say that this decree is a nullity, schools cannot change uniforms on a basis that a new political party wears the same colour. What came first, the school uniform or CCC? The law doesn’t operate in retrospection.”
Is wearing regalia in yellow now a crime in Zimbabwe? Under which law? And why?
In the past few weeks at rallies and after rallies, CCC supporters have reported being attacked by likely Zanu-PF supporters.
Of significance, were the Gokwe and Kwekwe rallies that saw supporters being attacked using knifes, machetes and catapults resulting in several of CCC supporters being injured and one Mboneni Ncube losing his life.
Freedom of expression and of political affiliation is being trampled upon in Zimbabwe albeit against the Constitution.
