The Registrar of Private Voluntary Organizations, in conjunction with the Private Voluntary Organization (PVO) board, has noted with concern that a number of Non-Governmental Organisations are not complying with the prescribed expectations of their operations.
This development has since seen the Ministry of Public Services, Labour and Welfare de-registering 291 such organisations a development that has cost so many people their jobs.
“Accordingly, the Registrar of Private Voluntary Organizations and the Private Voluntary Organization Board have therefore de-registered 291 organizations that were found to be non-compliant with the provisions of Private Voluntary Organization,” said the Director of Social Development, Tawanda Zimhunga, in the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare in a statement.
This decision was taken because the affected NGOs failed to comply with the prescribed expectations of their operations as outlined in terms of the Private Organisation Act (Chapter 17:05).
“The cancellation of a certificate of registration under this section or the deletion there from of any of the objects in respect of which the organisation in question was registered, shall be published by the Registrar in the Gazette and shall take effect as from the date mentioned in such publication, whether or not the certificate has been lodged with the Registrar in compliance with a request made under subsection (4),” reads the Private Voluntary Organisations Act.
Some of the de registered entities based in Matabeleland region are the Matabeleland Irish Association, Girl Guides Association Matabeleland Province, Ilanda/Woodlands Women’s Institute, Bulawayo Muslim Association, Jairos Jiri Memorial Trust, Makokoba Welfare and Development Organisation, and Senior Citizens Day Club.
