Johannesburg, South Africa – The bail application for Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe (28) and his co-accused, Tobias Matonhodze Mugabe (33), has been adjourned to Thursday, 5th March 2026, after the defense requested more time to review outstanding documents from the State.
The two appeared briefly in the Alexandra Magistrate Court in Johannesburg on Tuesday, where proceedings were delayed to allow the legal team to prepare adequately.
The Charges
The pair have been in custody since February 23rd, facing a trio of serious charges: attempted murder, obstruction of justice, and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. The charges stem from an alleged incident on February 19th, in which Chatunga is accused of shooting a 23-year-old male employee.
The exact circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear. Initially, Chatunga was charged with attempted murder. However, additional charges were later preferred after police were unable to locate the weapon used in the shooting.
Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhuwi, a spokesperson for the South African Police Service in Gauteng, confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
“The weapon has not yet been located,” Col Nevhuhuwi stated, adding that spent cartridges were recovered from the scene.
The victim remains hospitalized.
Court Proceedings
The brief court appearance on Tuesday was primarily procedural. The defense team indicated that they required additional time to study outstanding documentation expected from the State before they could proceed with the substantive bail application.
Consequently, the magistrate adjourned the matter to Thursday, when the court will hear arguments regarding the release of the two accused persons.
The case has drawn significant public attention in both South Africa and Zimbabwe. Chatunga is the son of the late former President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe.
