BULAWAYO – A 24-year-old taxi driver from Gwabalanda has been convicted of attempted murder following a violent attack on a passenger during a late-night fare dispute.

Amazing Grace Sibanda appeared before the Bulawayo Magistrates’ Court, where he was found guilty of a vicious assault that left a 33-year-old man unconscious.

The incident occurred on 26 October 2025, around 11PM, at the corner of Herbert Chitepo Street and 6th Avenue.

According to the state’s case, Sibanda had picked up the victim and two friends in a white Honda Fit. An argument over taxi fares broke out during the journey, prompting Sibanda to turn back to the original pickup point.

Upon arrival, Sibanda and two unidentified accomplices who are still at large, launched a violent assault on the victim.

“They used a sjambok, iron bars and bricks in the attack, beating the man until he lost consciousness”.

Sibanda was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment. However, 3 months were suspended for five years, and the remaining 9 months were set aside on condition he performs 315 hours of community service.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) condemns the use of violence in resolving disputes and urges the public to settle differences peacefully.

“Violence will not be tolerated. The law will take its full course against those who resort to brutality”.
