BULAWAYO – A 78-year-old man, Nkosana Dube has appeared before the Tredgold Magistrates’ Court facing two counts of theft after he allegedly stole groceries from two different supermarkets on the same day.

According to the court’s case, the incident occurred on 24 July 2025. On the first count, Dube visited TM supermarket along 5th Street, between Leopold Takawira and 8th Avenue.

He reportedly picked a few grocery items and placed them in his bag. Upon reaching the till point, he walked past without paying.

When questioned, he claimed he was going to withdraw money from the bank and would return to settle the bill.

“Dube was stopped at the door by the security guard, and the goods were recovered”.

On the second count, Dube proceeded to TM Hyper at Fort Street and 10th Avenue, where he allegedly repeated the same behaviour taking groceries without paying.

The prosecution further states that, this time he was intercepted at the exit by a security guard. The goods were confiscated and handed over to the police, leading to his arrest.

Dube is facing charges of theft as defined in Section 113 of the Criminal Law ( Codification Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23]. He remains in custody with pending further court proceedings.

As this case unfolds, it show that regardless of age, everyone is accountable to the law, and due process ensures fairness and order.

However, it raises questions in the community about elderly welfare, support systems, and possible reasons behind such acts.
