DAR ES SALAAM – Tanzanian businesswoman Jenifer “Niffer” Jovin, 31, is facing treason charges—a crime punishable by death in Tanzania—for her alleged participation in the viral “Nywinywi” online challenge, a case that has drawn international condemnation and accusations of severe government repression.
The charges stem from a video challenge that uses the Swahili phrase “Hakutakuwa na nywinywi, nywinywi wala nywenywinyi,” loosely translated as “no more excuses” or “we are done being fooled.” The phrase has been used as a symbol of political dissent.
The Tanzanian government has charged Jovin with two counts of treason, conspiracy to damage infrastructure, and incitement during the general election period, alleging that the online challenge constitutes a threat to the state.
The case has sparked outrage, with critics labeling the government’s response as disproportionate and absurd.
“That is how absurd and repressive Madam Dictator’s Tanzania has become, a complete laughing stock before the world,” read a statement from a coalition of regional human rights activists, referring to President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
Disturbing allegations of torture have emerged from the proceedings. Jovin’s lawyer stated in court that his client was physically assaulted while in police custody and was forced to sign a statement under duress.
The lawyer further detailed the abuse, stating that on November 5, 21 of Jovin’s co-accused had visible injuries, with some still limping or bearing gunshot wounds.
“That is how shameless Madam Dictator’s regime has become, a bloody stain on Tanzania’s reputation,” the lawyer was reported as saying during the hearing.
The “Nywinywi” case is being closely watched by international human rights organizations, who see it as a critical test for freedom of expression in Tanzania.
If convicted, Jovin could face the death penalty, a sentence that has not been carried out in the country for decades but remains on the statute books for treason.
