German Nurse Sentenced to Life for Murdering 10 Patients to ‘Reduce Workload’

Aachen – A German palliative care nurse has been sentenced to life in prison after a court found him guilty of murdering 10 patients and the attempted murder of 27 others, in a shocking case where he allegedly administered lethal injections to ease his workload during night shifts.

The crimes took place at a hospital in Wuerselen, western Germany, between December 2023 and May 2024. The man, who has not been publicly identified, was arrested last year.

During the trial, prosecutors portrayed the nurse as a man who played “master of life and death.” The court heard that he showed “irritation” and a distinct lack of empathy towards patients who required more intensive care. To reduce his duties, he injected them with fatal doses of painkillers like morphine and sedatives such as midazolam.

The Aachen court delivered a life sentence, emphasizing the “particular severity of guilt” in the case.

This designation is significant as it will likely prevent his early release after the standard 15-year review period common in the German justice system.

While the man can still appeal the verdict, the investigation into his actions is far from over. Prosecutors have indicated that exhumations are underway to identify further potential victims, which could lead to another trial.

This case bears a grim resemblance to that of Niels Högel, a former nurse who was convicted in 2019 for murdering 85 patients and is considered Germany’s most prolific serial killer in its modern history.
