Bulawayo – A two-month-old baby has died in a suspected case of fatal poisoning after his mother allegedly breastfed him following the use of the illicit drug crystal meth.

The infant, Sibusiso Dube, was found unresponsive by his 22-year-old mother on the morning of November 4, 2025. According to police reports, the incident occurred after the mother consumed the drug with a friend the previous night around 9 PM, breastfed her child, and then both fell asleep.

Police are investigating the case as a sudden death, and the baby’s body has been taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

In a stern statement, Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu, the deputy police spokesperson for Bulawayo, highlighted the grave dangers of substance abuse.

“We advise that drug use can impair judgment and lead to dangerous behaviors, negligence, or crimes,” Assistant Inspector Ndlovu stated.

“This is a heartbreaking example of the consequences. We also have a strong message for those involved in drug dealing and use: law enforcement will take decisive action against you.”

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the community and serves as a grim reminder of the far-reaching impact of the drug epidemic.
