ZETDC Urges Public to Cut Trees Near Power Lines to Prevent Outages

The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), a subsidiary of ZESA Holdings, has called on members of the public to trim or remove trees and branches that are encroaching on overhead power lines around their properties.

In a public notice, ZETDC warned that trees falling on power lines or overhanging branches have become a major cause of faults and unplanned power outages across the country.

“Trees falling on power lines and branches encroaching onto power lines in and around consumer premises have become one of the major contributing factors to faults,” ZETDC said in the notice.

The utility reminded the public that property owners are legally required to manage vegetation near power lines.

“Customers are required under the Electricity (Distribution Code) Regulations (SI 47 of 2017), Section 11.2.4, to trim or cut tree branches and trees that interfere with the transmission and distribution of electricity within their premises,” the company said.

However, ZETDC stressed that such work must be done with safety in mind.

“In the interest of safety, the trimming and cutting of such trees should be done under the supervision of ZETDC to avoid cases of electrocution,” the notice stated.

The power utility also advised residents to engage their local service centres before taking any action.

“Customers are urged to liaise with their nearest Client Service Centre for guidance on trimming and cutting of such trees and branches,” ZETDC said.

The company urged members of the public not to plant trees directly beneath or close to power lines to avoid future complications.
