‎As Zimbabwe prepare for their final FIFA World Cup 2026 Group C qualifier against Lesotho this evening at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, head coach Michael Nees has called on his players to show the same fighting spirit and determination that earned them a hard-fought draw against South Africa three days ago.

‎Kick-off is set for 1800hrs CAT, and although the atmosphere may be calmer than Durban’s electric scenes, Nees believes his side has the confidence and drive to finish the campaign on a positive note.

‎Zimbabwe’s qualification journey has been one of mixed fortunes, marked by moments of growth and frustration. The Warriors will be eager to make amends after their 2–0 defeat to Lesotho in the reverse fixture last year under former coach Jairos Tapera.

‎However, Nees insists that this team is better structured, mentally stronger, and ready to turn the tables.

‎“Lesotho play a very physical, direct game focused on quick transitions. We must be ready for the battle, especially just 72 hours after our demanding match in Durban where we played 35 minutes with ten men,” Need noted.

‎That goalless draw against Bafana Bafana was a show of resilience, with the Warriors holding firm despite being a man down following Knowledge Musona’s red card. Nees praised his players’ determination and tactical discipline.

‎ “There is a lot to be proud of. The players showed organisation, heart, and unity even in tough circumstances. Now we must repeat that intensity against a completely different opponent,” he noted.

‎Lesotho, who recently lost 2–1 to Nigeria at the same venue, have been defensively solid and dangerous on the counterattack. They also hold the psychological edge after their earlier win over Zimbabwe, a result Nees is determined to overturn.

‎“We want to correct that loss and close the campaign strongly. Lesotho have had mixed results, but also some impressive performances, especially against Nigeria and Rwanda. We’re confident of a good result this time,” he said.

‎The Warriors’ preparations have been hampered by injuries and fatigue. Nees confirmed that Thando Ngwenya and Knowledge Musona are ruled out, while a few others remain doubtful after the physically demanding Durban encounter.

‎ “A few changes are expected in the starting line-up. We have to manage energy levels carefully, but I trust the depth and commitment in this squad. Whoever plays must give everything for the badge and for Zimbabwe,” Coach Nees revealed.

‎Returning to Peter Mokaba Stadium brings back fond memories, it was here that Zimbabwe sealed qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations last year. Nees hopes that the positive energy from that achievement will inspire another memorable performance.

‎ “We have had good moments in Polokwane before, and we want to create more. Hopefully, many Zimbabwean fans will come to support us, their energy always makes a difference”, he said.

‎Although qualification for the World Cup is no longer possible, Nees views this fixture as part of a bigger process in rebuilding the team’s identity and restoring pride in Zimbabwean football.

‎“This match is about pride and progress,” he emphasized. “We’re developing a mix of young talent and experienced leaders who are learning to represent Zimbabwe the right way.”

‎As the sun sets over Polokwane, the Warriors will take to the field carrying the hopes of millions back home. For Nees and his men, tonight is about competing with belief, showing character, and finishing with pride, a statement that Zimbabwean football continues to grow, one game, one step, one fight at a time.

‎The Warriors’ clash against Lesotho represents more than just a final qualifier, it is a test of pride, resilience, and progress. Despite a challenging campaign marked by setbacks, Nees’ side has shown determination and unity, qualities that reflect a team in transition and growth.

‎A strong performance in Polokwane would not only avenge their earlier defeat but also reaffirm Zimbabwe’s commitment to rebuilding a competitive and spirited team for future tournaments.
