‎In a historic milestone for Zimbabwean sport, Bulawayo has become the first Province to field a team to compete directly against government ministries in the 2025 Inter-Ministerial Games, held from October 6 to 10 at the United College of Education (UCE).

‎Organised by the Ministry of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, the annual sporting event brought together 26 government ministries and six parastatals for five days of spirited competition, wellness promotion, and social engagement.

‎This year’s games ran under the theme “Fitness First: Strengthening Bones through Sports and Wellness,” with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development championing the message of physical fitness and teamwork among civil servants.

‎The atmosphere at United College of Education (UCE) was electric, as men and women from various ministries stepped out of their offices and onto the playing fields.

‎The event featured a range of sports, including men’s soccer, volleyball for both genders, women’s netball, tug of war, and darts.

‎Civil servants competed within and across ministries, with matchups such as the Ministry of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture facing off against the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development.

‎Speaking on the sidelines of the games, Patience Mudzwera from the Ministry of Agriculture expressed appreciation for the event’s impact on wellness:

‎“These games help us maintain our health and wellness. I’m participating in athletics and volleyball, and I’m really excited to be part of this year’s event,” she said.

‎Beyond the sporting action, the event also created space for local entrepreneurs and creatives to showcase their work.

‎Among them was Mr. Takunda Chiduwa, founder and designer of the Great Zimbabweans brand, who said the event offered a powerful platform for business exposure.

‎“I design and create T-shirts, caps, bags, and hats that feature Zimbabwean monuments to promote tourism and national identity. Since I fall under the Ministry of Tourism, these games are beneficial for me,” said Chiduwa.

‎The inclusion of Bulawayo’s Provincial team added a new dynamic to the games, reflecting growing participation and regional pride.

‎The success of this year’s edition has set the stage for broader involvement and greater unity across Zimbabwe’s public sector through sport.
