GWERU – Three Midlands State University (MSU) students are facing prosecution for allegedly subverting constitutional government after opposing moves to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term of office, the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) confirmed on Friday.

The students – Milton Muchayana (21), Anenyasha Moyo (22), and Langton Muhoma (22) – were arrested on August 8, 2025, at the MSU Gweru campus and charged with subverting constitutional government as defined in section 22(2) of the Criminal Law Code, or alternatively, incitement to commit public violence.

According to court prosecutors, the trio allegedly connived to create and distribute fliers containing messages opposing the proposed extension of President Mnangagwa’s term to 2030.

“In court, prosecutors alleged that Muchayana, Moyo and Muhoma connived to originate information inciting public violence against the government, which was inscribed on 12 fliers and was distributed to some MSU students,” ZLHR stated in their release.

The prosecution told the court that some of the fliers contained messages reading:

“Call for rebellion against 2030 vision” and “If humanity must thrive, then individuals are compelled to outmanoeuvre others.”

Law enforcement authorities seized two mobile phones, an HP laptop, and an Epson printer as exhibits, which prosecutors claim were used to create and print the allegedly inciting materials.

The three students, who spent 14 days in detention before being granted bail by Masvingo High Court Judge Justice Regis Dembure, are represented by Reginald Chidawanyika of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights.

“Muchayana, Moyo and Muhoma, who are out of custody on bail… return to court on 9 October 2025,” the ZLHR statement confirmed.

The case has drawn attention to freedom of expression issues in academic institutions as the nation discusses potential constitutional amendments regarding presidential term limits.
