Bulawayo —In recent remarks that have sparked widespread outrage, prominent Zimbabwean journalist Hopewell Chin’ono has told off the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) for its perceived ineffectiveness and corruption.
Chin’ono’s comments, echoing the sentiments of many citizens, highlight the urgent need for accountability and reform within the agency tasked with safeguarding Zimbabwe’s environment.
A Call for Accountability:
Chin’ono described EMA as a
“useless, clueless, greedy, inept, corrupt, self-serving bunch of parasites,”
asserting that the agency has failed to fulfill its fundamental role in protecting the nation’s natural resources.
His frustrations are shared by many who have witnessed the degradation of Zimbabwe’s environment, made worse by unchecked mining activities and waste mismanagement.
“The inactivity of EMA, the body responsible for the protection of the environment, is unacceptable,”
said Chin’ono, referencing a letter by legal advocate David Coltart.
Coltart’s correspondence emphasized the urgent need for the EMA to take action, and criticized the judiciary for its failure to address environmental matters effectively.
Calls for Reform and Community Service:
Chin’ono voiced a bold vision for the future, suggesting that when Zimbabwe returns to a government accountable to its people, a forensic audit of EMA and its leadership should be conducted.
He proposed that those found guilty of corruption should be sentenced to community service, contributing to the cleanup of the nation’s environment.
“EMA bosses can go and pick up all the trash that litters the nation and fill in all the ‘dongas’ created by Chinese mines,”
Chin’ono stated, underscoring the urgent need for practical solutions to the environmental crisis.
The Broader Context:
The criticisms aimed at EMA come amid broader concerns about governance and the management of natural resources in Zimbabwe.
Detractors argue that the relationship between the government and private mining interests has often led to environmental degradation and a lack of accountability for those responsible.
As citizens express their frustrations, the call for transparency and reform within EMA is gaining traction.
Many Zimbabweans are hopeful that by holding the agency accountable, they can reclaim their environment and ensure a sustainable future for the country.
The outcry against the EMA serves as a critical reminder of the need for effective environmental governance in Zimbabwe.
As calls for reform intensify, the nation stands at a crossroads, facing the challenge of balancing economic interests with the goals to protect its natural heritage.
The future of Zimbabwe’s environment may depend on the actions taken today to address corruption and promote accountability within its institutions.
